Home Retreat: Furnishing a House as a Wellness Oasis

Furnishing a house is like tailoring a suit: it must be done to measure, precisely and customised to perfectly fit the individual taste of the owner. Designer Nina Maya knows this well. “I started my career in fashion,” she tells us, “I dressed celebrities like Cate Blanchett. As I grew, my taste and interests matured, and I became increasingly fascinated by interior design. Many of the skills I honed in fashion, I transferred to the world of interiors, working with colour, form, client relations, and dealing with numerous suppliers and artisans.”

Thus, after several years spent in Italy working in fashion, the Australian interior designer decided to pursue her first great passion: design. The business grew organically, leading Nina Maya to become a prominent name in the Australian residential interiors scene, known for her sophisticated and minimal elegance, meticulously curated in every detail. The clients of this splendid residence in Balmain, a wealthy Sydney suburb surrounded by water, fans of the designer and her former fashion brand, gave her the opportunity to design and furnish their home. The client’s brief was to create a functional house for their family, giving it a fresh and modern atmosphere like a beach house. “The vision for this project was to create a sense of escape, like a wellness oasis. This desire became even more important during the pandemic – the period in which the house was built – as the clients could no longer travel to their favourite destinations,” says Nina Maya. To achieve this goal, she opted for a minimal design and a refined selection of materials such as travertine, wood, and bronze-plastered walls, which characterise each interior space to the maximum.
