Nina Maya creates family home with fresh beach house feel
Australian studio Nina Maya Interiors was commissioned to create a functional family home for a family of 4 in the heart of Balmain, Australia. The key was to give the home a fresh and modern beach house feel, which was done through a sober design and a sophisticated tonal choice of materials of travertine, wood, plastered walls and bronze accents in the bespoke joinery.
The vision beforehand was to create a sense of escape and retreat. The clients lead busy lives and wanted their home to feel like their own retreat. This feeling became all the more important during the pandemic – when the house was built – as they could no longer escape to their favourite holiday destinations.
The materials allow the craftsmanship and architectural elements to shine.
To create this desired feeling, a new, lower level was excavated on the grounds dedicated to leisure and health. Think of a modern gym, a steam room, a home cinema, a billiard room and a bar. In addition to these areas, the generous three-storey home contains 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a study, a beautifully landscaped pool and a cabana.
The house has a refined style with a minimalist luxury feel, and the beautiful materials allow the craftsmanship and architectural elements to shine. For example, the fireplace was entirely handmade in individual pieces of curved travertine, which took three days to complete. In the master bedroom with private bathroom, a soft colour palette was used. In the bathroom, curved vanity units covered in micro-cement adorn the room, as well as integrated washbasins handmade in white Elba marble. The room also has marmorino plastered walls.
Nina Maya carefully chose the furniture and art pieces for each room to create an elevated and sophisticated aesthetic. The residence features several pieces by Australian architect and furniture designer Daniel Boddam. The studio has a great fondness for his organic forms and references to nature, which beautifully complement the natural material choices. These pieces were combined with unique vintage finds from around the world to give the project a cosmopolitan feel.
